The single most important ingredient to photography is stunning light for your subject. You cannot capture anything with great effect without the right light. I was editing my work for the last ten days or so, and found a number of images that simply would never have succeeded except for the light. I’m going to share some with you and make a comment about the light in each. The scene above was something I saw driving back from a sunrise shoot with Sherelene out at Dead Horse
Point State Park, near Canyonlands. The original image was color, but still very monochromatic,
so I converted it in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0 to a good contrast range.

By contrast the image to
the right is the same kind
of condition, but the
color was much stronger,
thus I decided to leave it
as it was shot, in this case
the color works, but as
before the key is the light.

Both images below are
backlit, the trees in Bryce
and Sherelene shooting
at Balanced Rock. The
backlighting accents areas

of interest and makes the images pop. Below the sunrise at
Dead Horse Point State Park was just the right intensity to make the colors pop.

Time of day is also critical, early and late give that nice warm light that is so angular that it helps pull out all the texture, and thus sharpness. Below at Park Avenue in Arches National Park, the late afternoon light along with some nice puffy clouds did the trick…..

In your life, light is just as critical. Don’t walk in darkness, discover the one and only true source of light and life, Jesus Christ.

Blessings,

the pilgrim

Well we made it to Moab today and I know you know what my first stop was, you got it, Milt’s Stop & Eat. I’ve dreamed of their killer burgers ever since the last trip and I wondered was it as good as I remembered. I won’t keep you in suspense, I had the double, wow, what a hunk of meat and I gave it a new all time high score of 4.85. It was quite simply the best burger I’ve ever tasted in my life. If you love burgers and you haven’t been to Milt’s, buy a plane ticket now….

Not only is the burger the best,
but the people that run the place
are wonderful too. BC Laprade
has kept Milt’s true to it’s early
nineteen fifties roots and has
just made things better.

356 South 400 East, that’s the
best place in America, (at least
that I’ve found), to get a real
American creation, the Cheese-
burger. Of course having my
best friend, Sherelene along
was great too, she loved Milt’s
as well.

So BC, thanks for working hard
to keep something alive that
deserves to never change……

I’m only in town three days, guess
that means three trips to Milt’s!

Blessings,

the pilgrim

Yes I’m counting points……..

One of the great things about shooting,
is editing. After days of shooting, it’s a
real joy to sit down and review your
take. I have some favorites, no real
reason why, just those shots that seem to define a shooting trip. Please allow
me to share some I really like after the first edit.

Sometimes it’s the light, sometimes the the subject other times a special person in your life, or like the shot of the sign
above, just something that makes you laugh.

The joy of photography is like the joy of life, the knowledge that you’re blessed for every new day you are breathing and enjoying what God has placed around you.

Today’s Prayer, Thank You Father for this life, the people in it, the places You allow us to go and enjoy and the lives You allow us to touch for you, to Your glory and in Your Name.

Sorry about yesterday, but this had been one tough, and great tour with my wonderful friends from the Bio Communications Association. This group of folks are among the greatest people I have the honor and pleasure of working with. The added pleasure of having my bride, Sherelene and my boss and dear friend, Scott Diussa with us made things infinitely better. Wonderful locations in great light are made even better when you can enjoy seeing others enjoy it along side of you.

We covered a lot of ground in
just a few days; Lower Antelope
Slot Canyon, Bryce Canyon
N.P. and Zion National Park
as well as the Paria Wilderness
area, and Big Water near Lake
Powell. Sherelene, who stay very
busy as a Nurse Practicianer, got
back into shooting and did some
great shots, (special inset below
of some of her top shots).

The fellowship was even better
than the light and subject matter!
I’m blessed to be able to know
and work with such great people.

Thank you Lord,
