Oregon Coast – Day One

Our first day out on the coast has been sunny, but we got a break this morning at Ecola State Park, with some nice mist in the air hanging to the coast.  It held in the trees and gave a soft appearance to the early light spilling on the waves and sea stacks along the coast!  We have a great group of folks an they have been working hard under less tun perfect conditions!  The outlook for sunset is looking up as clouds are moving in around Cannon Beach.  WE will see, but hope springs eternal

Below Ed of Roanoke enjoys the breeze and the surf!

An off shore lighthouse peaks through the towering pines along the cliffs!

Hopefully, tomorrow I can show you a spectacular sunset!

Blessings,

the pilgrim

  1. Weather can be highly variable and moving just a few miles can change things. Not on the coast but a couple of good sunset spots are the Portland Women’s Forum State Park and the Vista House. You might find some different visions of Americana in Astoria and Tillamook. Some of my better Cannon Beach views are for free if you park near one of the motels on the south end of town and walk down to the beach. Cannon Beach itself may be too touristy for your liking. You may wish to check and see how some of the lavender farms are doing. There’s a Chinatown in downtown Portland and a well-preserved train station. You might also get some Americana in Silverton with its murals (including those honoring Norman Rockwell). If you make it that far inland then Silver Falls State Park is a must see for its waterfalls. Also, if you get further east, you can often get good sunset shots of Mount Hood from Trillium Lake Day Use Area a couple of miles east of Government Camp. There is a well-stocked camera shop (and Fuji dealer) in Portland, Pro Photo Supply, and a camera repair place in Beaverton. There’s a used camera shop in Portland as well that might be an Americana stop. And you simply cannot leave the area without somehow shooting a “KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD” bumper sticker on something or another. (I did not mention the Rose Garden and Japanese Garden because sometimes it can be too late in the year and parking restrictions put in place in the last year make it less convenient to be there.) I will be out there July 1-4. Good luck.

  2. P.S.: Sorry about the 101 degree heat.
