Taming self

Phillipians 2:3-4 (New Living Translation)
Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
The toughest enemy we will ever have to defeat is ourselves. The deceptively simple scripture above is harder to follow than almost any I’ve ever read. Let’s break it down.
Don’t be selfish. The practical application of this scripture should read, put an end to yourself. As long as self is allowed to thrive it will attempt to take over your spirit. It demands it’s way, and it wants only what it wants. Only completely surrendering self to Him will work.
Don’t try to impress others. Wow, it just gets worse and worse. Be honest how many of us live to impress others. How great does it feel when others praise us and tell us how great we are. It feels great but it is as death trap. As long as we strive to win the approval of others we will not seek the approval of our Heavenly Father.
Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Only when we we open our eyes and truly see ourselves for who we often are, can we genuinely see how much we lack that which pleases Him.
Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. When we are broken and honest before God only then can He fill us with His love which always looks out for the interests of others.
Galatians 2:20 contains the solution, “For I have been crucified with Christ, and I myself no longer live, but He lives in me.”
I want that to be the best description of me, I die everyday again to try and maintain it.
Give some time to Him in worship considering the words of this great song, Majesty.
Majesty (Here I Am)
Here I am humbled by your Majesty
Covered by your grace so free
Here I am, knowing I’m a sinful man
Covered by the blood of the Lamb
Now I’ve found the greatest love of all is mine
Since you laid down your life
The greatest sacrifice
Majesty, Majesty
Your grace has found me just as I am
Empty handed, but alive in your hands
Majesty, Majesty
Forever I am changed by your love
In the presence of your Majesty
Here I am humbled by the love that you give
Forgiven so that I can forgive
Here I stand, knowing that I’m your desire
Sanctified by glory and fire
Now I’ve found the greatest love of all is mine
Since you laid down your life
The greatest sacrifice.
