Practical application of a faith walk…….

Before I start this story let me be clear, I don’t consider this a tragedy.  Things happen….. such is life.  I want to concentrate on our response, not the ramifications.  Sunday night I left Corbin to drive down to Nashville for an early morning meeting with an important new commercial photography client for Nikon NPS.  Sherelene had the day off at the clinic Monday so she went with me.  She did some Christmas shopping while I called on the client.  When we arrived back home about 9:00 p.m. last night, we discovered that one whole wall of our kitchen cabinets had simply fallen off the wall smashing most of our dishes and glasses and some other stuff.

Now it’s the week of Thanksgiving, we have family coming in, and the kitchen looks like a war zone.  How do you respond?  Please believe me I’m not bragging, but I’m very pleased with how Sherelene and I dealt with the issue last night and this morning.  A lot of work lies ahead trying to get things cleaned up, repaired and restored, and some of the broken stuff can’t be replaced, but it’s just some cabinets and glasses, and dishes.  One of our first thoughts was what if one of our grandchildren had been standing there when the cabinets fell.  Even and adult would have likely been killed or seriously injured!  We could have come home to the smoldering remains of a home burned to the ground!  No, in the overall scheme of things this is just a hassle, it will soon be cleaned up, (Sherelene has clinic duty today, so after I file some weekly reports, I know what I will be doing.)

After the initial shock of seeing all this “stuff” in the floor we both agreed that it was just “stuff ” and got a good nights sleep.  Here is the simple truth, things happen, and God never promised us that our lives would be free of any stress or disappointment.  I think these kinds of circumstances give  us a great opportunity to see just how much we trust Him, and how grounded we are in our belief that God and family are what’s most important.

So the bottom line is; this is an inconvenience!  Sure it’s ugly, but it’s no big deal.  Everyone is safe, God is still on the throne, Thanksgiving will still be a time of thanksgiving for so much, and we have so much to be thankful for.  Don’t sweat the small stuff, it’s all small stuff…….. (great book title too!)

This is the day that Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Be at peace and be thankful,

When I first saw the picture, I thought your home had been broken into…… If you need any help give me a call Don’t mess that shoulder up.

  2. Sorry to see the mishap!! I had a similar situation right after our pantry shelves were installed. It is just a minor bump in the road of life. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

I have sat in that chair in the picture – I so remember the lovely kitchen! What a mess! What a mess!

How blessed you both were to be away from home!! And you, my friend, are so blessed to have a wife that understands “important” vs “unimportant”. I have a friend whose wife says, “I hold this world, and all its possessions, loosely”! I think that you and your wife do too. That says it all!

    Blessings

Bill……it’s ironic that my wife Penny was just talking about what really holds cabinets on the wall and what if they fell down. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen. That’s amazing!!! We both agree you have such a great take on that. You’re so right. So many times in life we complain about the smallest “problems” when in reality, in the big scheme of things, they don’t amount to much. We’re thankful that no one was hurt and we wish you a most wonderful thanksgiving with your family.

PS Hope the cleaning up went well. I’m sure by the time you get to read this, you’ll probably be done with it. Just keep repeating……”I WILL enjoy the turkey……I WILL enjoy the turkey”. 😉

What a shock! And yet still so much to be thankful for. I’m so sorry you have to deal with the cleanup and so thankful for your priorities. Wish I were close enough to help. I hope you and your family enjoy a joyous and blessed time together.

    Hi Bill,

I’m so glad that no one was home when this happened. Over the years I’ve had numerous similar things happen. The last time was when I had a beautiful genuine tiffany stained glass lamp fall from the ceiling smashing into my computer chair and on my keyboard. This would have been about 150 pounds falling on my head from a height of about 9 feet. We just need to know that when things like this happen, God is still in control protecting us from even worse things.

Bill, pray for me. Tomorrow I’ll be playing and singing for the Utah Jazz and many needy Salt Lakers who will be receiving an early Thanksgiving Dinner from them.

Blessings and better days Bill. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving,

    Rob

        1) as a Tech fan, I am thankful for glpmesis of improvement. As a Skins fan, I am ecstatic for RG3!2) mom, my hs algebra teacher, the collective cast of characters from 88.1, my old news EP, my childhood neighbor3) Our first responders for all their work in times of fires, floods, tornados and other forces of nature. That coupled with the generousity of the American people who have given to those hit hard, despite these tough economic times.

Any time we take a family vcataion, I either go to the grocery store in the town we are vcataioning in or I grocery shop prior to going. If we eat all the fast food restaurants while vcataioning, we feel horrible after the vcataion.

Bill, when you have someone rehang that cabinet or bring another one, make sure they check to see that all the others are hung properly. You wouldn’t want version 2 of this. Glad no one was hurt. Hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving.
