The much rumored D600 is here!!!
The much rumored Nikon D600 is finally a reality and a good reality at that. Keep in mind that only a few years ago a 24 mega pixel DSLR was $8,000.!!! If the developments that have allowed the D3200, D800 and D4 are incorporated here, and I’m sure they will be, this is going to be a groundbreaking DSLR! I expect to have mine next week and I will do a thorough test and share my thoughts with you. For now I am very impressed with the decisions we made on this camera! It is not a stripped down model and includes most of the major feature that I love the most about the D800. I see it as a great camera for anyone that does not need the 36 mega pixels of a D800 or the speed and ruggedness of a D4. With a magnesium frame (top, and back), it should hold up to good steady use. The shutter is a Kevlar blade model that has proven to have great performance as well in previous camera.
I can’t really say more now until I shoot it, but dont be shocked if I don’t have glowing comments then!!

I’ve been keeping my eye on the d600 – so excited it’s been released. I’m totally a Nikon girl and I’m praying that somewhere in my future will be a full-frame sensor camera. I can’t wait to read your review. Still have my eye on the d800 though. I like those megapixels. I’d be interested to know what you sacrifice getting the d600 instead of the d800 and if those things are really worth it – I guess it depends what you shoot – I’m totally into the landscapes and I do a lot of HDR also. Thanks Bill – can’t wait to read your review.
I’ll keep you in the loop! I think either camera will be spectacular! Stay tuned!!!!
This brings in the $64,000 question…. How many megapixels is enough? The way I figure it, it depends almost solely on the printing one does. If you don’t make large prints of your images the D800 may be overkill… or is it? I don’t make very large prints (yet!) but I still find myself wanting the D800. 🙂
I am leaning toward the D600 because I have to ask myself “do I need more than 24MP?” The $900 saved can go towards the 16-35 or 14-24 that I want to go with it. The “gear monster” in me wants both, seems that would be the holy grail setup for someone who doesn’t shoot much action.
I think you are thinking correctly, the D600 should have very high resolution for a good savings. I will let you guys know all about it after I get a chance to shoot it, hopefully next week.
Bill,
We are very interested in getting a look at this camera. Please keep me in the loop. Maybe we can schedule a visit.
Let’s try to do that!
Count me among those eager to see your D600 review. Hope that will include a side-by-side D600/D800 resolution test. dpreview.com is great for comparing all the nuts, bolts and numbers, but your in-hand impressions and common-sense recommendations streamline all that into something that’s uniquely accessible and helpful.
Thank you for some other excellent post. The place else may just anyone get that kind of information in such an ideal manner of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I’m at the look for such information.
