D600 after a few weeks……..
I’ve now had the D600 for long enough to really get to know it and I have some additional observations. I will cut right to the chase, I think the D600 represents the best value in DSLR on the market today! Here’s why;
1. The D600 is the highest resolution DSLR on the market, save for the D800, and is more than enough detail for virtually any subject you and I will ever shoot.
2. The D600 represents a significant bargain, especially when you consider just three years ago a D3x was $8,000. and the closest competitor from Canon with slightly less resolution is $3,500. The cost alone is pretty amazing, what’s even more amazing is that the D600 outperforms either of these cameras. It is much lower noise than the D3x and very close to the 5D Mark III. It is only 1/2 stop slower than the frame rate of the 5D Mark III, and it costs $1,400 less!!!!
3. With the exception of my favorite DX body the D7000 the D600 has the sweetest release and quietest shutter in the line up. It is a joy to shoot hand held and when you lock it on a tripod it uses the ML-L3 wireless remote, I truly love this combination.
4. The very vital aspect of ergonomics, this camera simply feels great in your hands. It has enough heft to feel substantial, but is light enough to be refreshing. I don’t think anyone should be concerned about the build quality!
5. After doing a number of HDR images by shooting three images 2 stops apart, I’m convinced, that unless you are an HDR master and shoot almost everything as an HDR, this camera will cover your bases just fine.
6. I can’t wait to get my hands on the very reasonably priced wireless transmitter, the WU-1b, I think it will be a hoot to shoot straight to the iPad!!! Add to that the App for you iPhone that allows you to operate the camera wirelessly! Wow, what fun!!!
7. I’m starting to really love SD cards, they are less expensive, are coming on very fast speeds, and it’s easy to carry a bunch of them! And the D600 works with dual SD slots.
8. But most important of all, this camera makes absolutely gorgeous images! It is so good it makes me wonder why I will keep the D800, of course I’ll kept a D800 as my 4X5 view camera!!!! But for everyday shooting this D600 has found an honored place in my camera bag!
You couldn’t spend $2,100. any better……

Thank you for this most excellent review. I read something on Scott Kelby’s post about the Nikon D800 vs. D600 that I hadn’t thought of – file size. I guess raw images in Nikon D800 are huge (according to SK) and probably the D600 are a bit smaller. Didn’t think about that because I’ve always thought my full frame crop sensory someday in the future would be the D800. So good to read about the high quality of the D600 – but then it’s a Nikon and I’m totally a Nikon girl – wouldn’t use anything else – I love my Nikon D7000!
Yes the files from the D600 are still large,m but not as large as form the D800. The Raw file forma D800 straight out of the camera are around 75 mega-bites!!
Thanks for this useful review as well as your earlier, equally helpful advice on this topic. I’m so eager to shake-down my D600 on the upcoming His Light events!

I have a D5000 and after reading your posts and watching your lessons on Kelby Training thought I would move to a D7000 but now I’m not sure. I only have DX lenses so the 7000 makes sense but I also think I might want a little higher resolution. I’d be willing to wait a bit if Nikon is going to upgrade the 7000 with higher resolution. What would you do?
The D7000 is the equivalent resolution since it packs 16 mega pixels on a DX sensor, I think you would love the D7000 and can use all your current lenses.

I went from a D90 to a D600 and LOVE it! Well, “loved” actually. I dropped it after just a week of owning it so now Nikon is repairing it… ugh. Sadly I didn’t even have insurance due to some dust on the sensor and some return issues (long story). The store I got it from had dust on almost all the D600 sensors. Odd!
Ok, enough crying on my end. Thanks, Bill for sharing your knowledge. I enjoy following your work.

Bill, I meant to mention that the RRS L-bracket for D7000+battery grip fits the D600+MB-D14 well enough to avoid buying a separate L-bracket.

My first DSLR was the D90 and I was longing for a full frame camera. I was really eyeballing the D800 But it was just a little out of my price range. I started to settle for the D7000, but I did not think I would gain that much over my D90. Then I hear rumor of the D600… So I waited, and waited. I was all over the nikon site the day it was released and at Best buy when they opened the Saturday after… Wow, I am really loving it! I don’t know why they bothered putting a built in flash on the thing… The low light performance of this camera is great! Now all I’m missing is a Bill Fortney Workshop! 😉

Thanks for your insite on the D600 Bill. I have been looking around at different cameras to carry as a second camera. I was originally looking at the D7000 to have a DX body so it would be lighter and I could get a little more “range” from my FX lenses I have for my D800. I have looked at the D600, but not that hard. I have actually been waiting to see if Nikon releases the rumored D400, but it doesn’t look very promising any time soon. Do you think the D600 would be a good secondary carry camera to go along with my D800 since I do already have several FX lenses that will work on it or do you think I would be better off going with the D7000 or maybe holding out for the hope that the D400 finally releases? The rumored specs of the D400 look very nice.
My new D600 is due to arrive tomorrow (Saturday). Looking at some used lenses since I making the change from Canon L glass.
I’ve been reading about dust issues and oil spots. If this happens on mine do i just try to clean it using the blower, send it to Nikon for cleaning, or buy the kit and try to clean it myself? I have heard that using anything other than than air will void the warranty. I live in Kansas City and don’t know where the closest service center is located. Advice?

What about the alleged oil spots and dust issues. Have you noticed this to be a problem with the D600s?
I had the issue with mine. Set the intervalometer (built in) to 2×999 shots. Let it fire away. Cleaned the sensor. No more problems so far. Looks like that was enough shots to get that excess oil off the shutter. I’m 2×999 shots closer to the 150,000 shutter rating but that’s ok.
