Getting in close……

11 years, 1 month ago 8

This morning before we had to set up our table at Southwestern, Kyoshi and I went to the zoo!  Jay Miller had told me it was a fantastic zoo and it sure was!!!  they had a great reptile house and I had been wanting to do some serious close-up work, but was worried about shooting through glass!  I have been using a new technique for me, using live view to do critical focusing manually in close-up work. I always use manual focus in close-up photography and this system worked wonderfully at the reptile facility at the Fort Worth Zoo!!  I will share a few shots and then  I will show a 100% crop, that is the original file at 100%!!!!  as I have below of the shot at the top.  If you want to get a good look at them just click on the image to enlarge it!!  I wa really pleased athow well the tecnique worked, hope you enjoy the images.

Lots of fun, and not that hard to do!  Just takes a little patience, a tripod and careful technique!

Cool, creepy, critters. Beautiful photos. Are you going to tell us what camera you are using? Now if I can just not dream about those critters tonight!

I agree I sure don’t want to dream of those guys either, I was glad they were behind glass!

Soooo glad you did another vlog!! I LOVED it; makes me feel like I’m gtteing to know you (and your cute cute pup dog) across your kitchen table! As for the pet peeve #1 I HATE it when parents don’t take accountability for their own kids at any time but especially when they choose to chat among themselves instead of focusing on the kids, whether it’s a party or a sporting event or a school event. It’s a huge huge pet peeve of mine as well, and believe me only gets worse and worse as your kids get older. (There, I feel better! Thanks again for the lovely vlog!

OK, these are just pain unbelievable! I am super impressed. I have been successful earlier this year shooting through glass at the Georgia Aquarium and a sunrise through my hotel window. Amazing Bill. Can’t wait to see you next week, learn from you and fellowship together. Also looking forward to meeting your friends and the other participants. Come on Friday!

How did you keep reflections on the glass out of the shots, did you use a polarizer? I know Scott Kelby recommends using a flexible rubber lens hood. They only cost a few bucks and screw on like a filter and mostly I use mine when working with a polarizer to keep my finger off the filter!

    • admin says:

No, wish I’d had one with me!! No I tried to stand in a spot to prevent reflections in the glass,
and tried an angle where the glass was cleanest. I wonder how sharp they might have been if
there was no glass, but then I would not have been happy knowing that black mamba was free to chase me!!!! but you made very good points!
