Why Some Athletes Can’t Get Regular Jobs

The danger of having just any sports figures as role models for kids….

  1. Chicago Cubs outfielder Andre Dawson on being a role model:

“I wan’ all dem kids to do what I do, to look up to me. I wan’ all the kids to copulate me.”

  1. New Orleans Saint RB George Rogers when asked about the upcoming season:

“I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first.”

  1. And, upon hearing Joe Jacobi of the ‘Skin’s say:

“I’d run over my own mother to win the Super Bowl,”

Matt Millen of the Raiders said: “To win, I’d run over Joe’s Mom, too.”

  1. Torrin Polk, University of Houston receiver, on his coach, John Jenkins:

“He treat us like mens. He let us wear earrings.”

  1. Football commentator and former player Joe Theismann:

“Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.”

  1. Senior basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh :

“I’m going to graduate on time, no matter how long it takes..”

(Now that is beautiful)

  1. Bill Peterson, a Florida State football coach:

“You guys line up alphabetically by height.”

And, “You guys pair up in groups of three, and then line up in a circle.”

  1. Boxing promoter Dan Duva on Mike Tyson going to prison:

“Why would anyone expect him to come out smarter? He went to prison for three years, not Princeton.”

  1. Stu Grimson, Chicago Blackhawks left wing, explaining why he keeps a color photo of himself above his locker:

“That’s so when I forget how to spell my name, I can still find my clothes.”

  1. Lou Duva, veteran boxing trainer, on the Spartan training regimen of heavyweight Andrew Golota:

“He’s a guy who gets up at six o’clock in the morning, regardless of what time it is.”

  1. Chuck Nevitt , North Carolina State basketball player, explaining to Coach Jim Valvano why he appeared nervous at practice:

“My sister’s expecting a baby, and I don’t know if I’m going to be an uncle or an aunt. (I wonder if his IQ ever hit room temperature in January)

  1. Frank Layden , Utah Jazz president, on a former player:

“I asked him, ‘Son, what is it with you? Is it ignorance or apathy?’

He said, ‘Coach, I don’t know and I don’t care.”

  1. Shelby Metcalf, basketball coach at Texas A&M, recounting what he told a player who received four F’s and one D:

“Son, looks to me like you’re spending too much time on one subject.”

  1. In the words of NC State great Charles Shackelford:

“I can go to my left or right, I am amphibious.”

Ah, but they ride to the bank in a Mercedes…

Blessings,

whats amazing to me is tat there is a lot of “Student athletes” that go on to be Dr’s Lawyers, Teachers and great folks… we never hear about them. We hear about the guys and gals who shouldn’t be in college to begin with and then, after the universities use them for 4 years and make a ton of money they are caste off into society , not ready for the real world.

Take the University of North Carolina for example. This school really plays pretend, as if football and basketball recruits are legitimate “student-athletes.” Basketball coach Roy Williams claimed he “had no idea” when UNC was revealed to be giving away no-show, keep-’em-eligible academic credits to full-scholarship recruits ( who even if they wanted a college education were provided the path to avoid it”.

I was blown away when Roy’s claim of surprise and ignorance surfaced in the NCAA tourney last March? It doesn’t take ,much to tell if a 18-19 year old will make a minimally legitimate college student by spending, oh, 10 minutes chatting with him.

But the mighty Williams (36 or so years coaching college ball and making millions in the process) spends seven straight months of every year with his recruits and has no idea if they needed a little “help” to get by, to make it to sophomore.

Either that or Williams is paid to not know, and to not recognize things he couldn’t possibly miss Was his hiring employment at UNC for many years (+ bonuses for making the tournament) predicated on the understanding that conspicuous truth, right in front of him is not his to see or make?
I ask you all .. why, as tournament teams are seen boarding or off-loading buses, are they now always seen wearing earphones? Why do we never see anyone carrying a book?

Bill .. you know I need to get a UK thing into my rant—however–I’ll say just this….

Calipari used to play the phony pretense game. He played college coach at Massachusetts then at Memphis. He won big at both places, vacated wind and championships and then bolted each as it was being punished for pretending to be a college.

This time at UK? —It’s all pretty real–I have to give him credit for that. There’s nothing to debate — the University of Kentucky fronts a basketball team period. They don’t claim to be turning out neurosurgeons.. and hes pretty upfront with that and for that I’ll give him a little credit tough as an IU Grad). I don’t want to hear about graduation rates and GPA’s–a joke–manipulated like most other universities!—a real shame.. not for me… but for the kids who don’t make it as pros!

…and a good 2 cents worth! Look around the entire world, greed, power hungry, blind leaders (in every part of society) that could care less abouet those they are steeping over and on to get where they want to go. Sad things is, when they arrive there they have a big surprise in store!

To everyone, sometime before midnight today Groundhog Day again! Says a lot!

  3. Richard Browne says:

Well, thanks Bill for reminding me why I shouldn’t read something like this at work – I blew water out my nose laughing at some of these. Time to clean up the mess and get back to work!

And Jack: “I ask you all .. why, as tournament teams are seen boarding or off-loading buses, are they now always seen wearing earphones? Why do we never see anyone carrying a book?”

Maybe they’re listening to the audio version of The Great Courses?
