You using any ND or CPL filters on your Mavic?

  2. Bill Fortney says:

These were shot without any, I bought ND 4,8,16 & 32 strength, from Polar Pro. Haven’t shot much video yet, sure I’ll need them them!

Seems to me that the filters are mostly needed for getting the shutter speed down to 1/60th or so, for a more cinematic smooth look, without blowing out the scenes highlights. So I wonder how useful these would be for stills, in that it may allow you to shoot straight into a nice sunset and not blow out the image, but the foreground would very dark. Seems a gradient filter would be useful at times. I guess shoot in raw and edit in post to tame highlights or raise the shadows.

How does the unit handle in wind?

    • admin says:

Pretty good up to a point, it was gusting up to around 15 mph today, and my shots were still stable, but I’m guessing that is near the limit! I noticed flying back from the shooting location, (maybe 400 yards away) it was a little slower going against the wind, but it came right back.

Sounds to me like a new approach to America from 500 feet. Too bad that we cant use them in the National Parks but I do understand because the complexity of the quantity of persons and not everyone would be conscientious. Can you imagine a bus load of tourist unloading at Arches with drones. It would be like getting in a nest of Yellow Jackets!
I really enjoy seeing these photographs and the potential.

As much as I wish I could fly in National Parks, I couldn’t agree more. We’ve already lost the peaceful experience in many parks due to over crowding! I can’t imagine dozens or hundreds of drones zipping around, and many would severely abuse the privilege! No, There is plenty of beauty to capture out there and still abide by the law!

take some time to get used to flying it from the ground compared you when you flied in the sky 🙂

How do you find the image quality compared to your Fuji?

    • admin says:

The camera in the drone is 12 mega pixels and a smaller sensor than in the Fujifilm cameras. I think it would compare poorly, however since the Fujifilm 24 mega pixel is so spectaculr, rivaling the 36 mega pixed sensor in the D810, it’s still pretty dang good. I would rather have my airplane and a Fuji, but this is a great susbstitute!!

It’s awesome to see you’ve entered the drone world. Can’t wait to see what you will do with it. After seeing your shots from the air in your books it wil be great. We got one too a few weeks ago and can’t wait to explore the world from a new perspective. Thanks again for a great Smokey Mountain workshop.

    Sandy,
If I may; I learned a great deal on those 100 plus flights for the book.

Only fly for photography , around pre sunrise until about an hour after and then one hour before sunset to about 15 minutes after sunset.

Lean to explore with your lens pointed straight down, or tilted mostly down!

Never fly in condition that concern you! I’m not comfortable with winds over 15 mph.

    Fly in line of site!

Preflight everything and have fully charged batteries.

    ……and have fun!!!
