Color & Texture….

One of the greatest compliments I’ve ever been paid was when Richard Small, a photographer who I greatly admire, called me the master of “Extraction”.  While I’m not sure if master is deserved, I have worked very hard at learning how to extract what I hope are good images out of the overall scene.  One of my favorite places to make images is Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Santa Fe is a feast of colors, patterns, textures and wonderful art.  We finished up after eight hours that started at 3;00 a.m. and after a nap,  Jay Miller, his wife Susan, our new friend Greg, and I headed back up to Santa Fe to have a Bobcat Bite burger and walk up Canyon Road.  If you ever visit Santa Fe, I highly recommend that you visit this little 3/4 mile long road, that is filled with one great subject after another.  I took the D800 and one lens, the 24-120 VR, and a tripod, and spent an hour and half just strolling up and down this famous street. I hope you enjoy the take and I hope this is proof that a good range zoom and one body can help you make a variety of interesting images!!

I hope I’ve inspired you to get out and look for some things that get you excited!  To all of you that are joining us in November out in Arizona and Utah, I can’t wait, this trip has gotten me really pumped!

Blessings,

the pilgrim

I enjoy your blog and it is NOW the first blog I read. I like your photography but more importantly your faith. Great shots. I have the D800 and I am learning to shoot with it. I have a Nikon 28 – 300 mm lens and a Nikon 24 – 70 f2.8. Which as a general purpose lens would you use? I notice also that you are enjoying the Nikon 24 – 120 VR. Is this a lens you would recommend over the two I’ve mentioned for the D800?

    Regards,
    Dave

You can’t go wrong with any of these lenses, the 24-70 f 2.8 is just barely the sharpest of them all, but the 24-120 is almost a sharp and has more range, the 28-300 has tons of range and is very sharp, not quite up to the other two, but for all practical purposes very close! You can’t go wrong any of them!!!

  3. Love these photos so much. The colors are spectacular. I’ve been in Santa Fe twice but more than 10 years ago, before the years with my Nikon D7000. Now I want to go back. And I just have to say I am TOTALLY excited about November in Utah and Arizona. I can’t wait.

Great images, Bill! I expecially like the top one, the one with the blue bench, and the bottom one. Beautiful compositions and color contrasts.

I was out yesterday so I did not get to see the post until today, great photo as always. Based on your recommendation I purchased the 24-120 and use it as my walk around lens.
Yours is the first thing I look at when I start my computer, Thank you for sharing your faith with us. It really means a lot to me.

You are too kind Bill! You are the best “visual extractor” I ever had the pleasure to shoot with! I wish everyone who loves photography could have a chance to spend some time with you and a camera! Keep at it and be sure to show us all how the “Master” does it!

You’re too kind, and I promise to work hard to even come close to that kind of praise from a real Master shooter!!! Love you man.
