Bill, I am interested to know if you have ever used a Leica digital camera and would be able to compare the Leica and Fuji systems. Not that I will ever be able to afford a Leica, but it seems like the Fuji is becoming the affordable alternative to Leica. It would be very interesting to read a comparison from someone with first-hand experience with both.
Thank you
I have owned and shot some Leica gear. It is mechanically probably the best in the world, their lenses are also stellar. But they lag behind in terms of modern electronic design, that plus their astronomical prices makes them, at least for me, a non starter.
Bill
Can you tell me who makes the lens cases that are visible in the photo of your standard kit?
Thank you
Fred
Actually Carl Turner showed me some from OpTech, I ordered some very similar dromedary Amazon with Draw strings , they come in packs of four, very nice and less than $15. A pack of four,
I’ll get the brand names for you.
The three brands were. HDE, BLUE CELL, and PHOTO TECH all came in four packs, I liked the HDE, And photo tech best.
Is the samyang 8mm a fisheye? I’ve been looking for a fisheye just to play with. Thanks.
It is and for $300. Is surprisingly good!
Looked it up for Canon and it’s f3.5 at 167 degrees.
Hi Bill!
I see you carry primes, which I understand for the photography that you will be doing in Arches. I was wondering about your opinion of the Fuji zooms (18-55 and 55-200). I have just received the XT-1 this last week and want it as a travel/documentary camera to lighten the load from my Canon 5DIII with multiple lenses. Are these lenses good choices, or should I stick with primes? I upgraded from the X100S for more flexibility with lenses.
Thanks!
Brian
PS: I’m heading to Oregon and Washington in May and your Kelby video on Olympic Park was great and I will watch it a couple of more times before I go!
The 18-55 and 55-200 are amazingly sharp, I carry the primes for when I need more speed, (larger aperture).
Hi Bill
I am going to suggest a piece for a person’s kit that is old school but works very effectively with the Fuji 55-200. A Nikon or Canon close up lens Saves buying a 60mm and used correctly ie. on a tripod in most cases it’s super sharp. Also these are cheaper than a lens.
I’d post a photo but can’t figure out how to import it into your comment page.
You are dead on, I have two old discontinued Nikon Diopters, the 5T and 6T, they work fantastic on the 55-200…..
Love your work.
Thanks Dave!
Sort of a low order technical question but I will ask it anyway…I have an xpro with 14, 35 and 60 mm lenses…given that most of my work is around landscape photography, what lens do you find you use the most …I want to get another lens, and highly tempted to get the 10-24 but the 23 and the 56 are talking to me as well given sharpness and low light capacities, not to mention reportedly fantastic bokeh. Thoughts, recommendations?? How to best think, prioritize and decision make?? (I eventually want to get all three of the above plus the 18-55 and the 55-200 maybe…then again I think some of the more famous photographers like Bresson had only one focal length – 35mm I think? I should note that I also have the x100s, so I debate about getting another 23mm lens) Too many choices!!????
BTW, when I said I loved your work, I meant your photographs as well as your bringing your faith into things…I think you are the first explicitly Christian photographer I have come across.
Its like you read my mind! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the
book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the
message home a little bit, but other than that, this is magnificent blog.
A great read. I will certainly be back.
It’s really a cool and helpful piece of information. I am glad
