Home, at last…….
We had a great week in Nova Scotia and truly appreciated Kevin Finch’s efforts and hospitality to his warm and beautiful country!!! Today on the flights home Jim shared some of his favorites and they were, as always, spectacular!! He asked me to pick my 5 favorites, which was tough! I thought I might share a few of my favorite images, not already published. I have no reason to pick these except they represent the joys of shooting in Nov Scotia, for me!
I shoot three version of every image with the Fuji X-T1, a Velvia (pumped color), Provia, (close to accurate color) , and a Monochrome with a red filter. These two, both, did it for me, for different reasons, you can think about them and react if you would like!!
These lobster floats had a very interesting pattern to their ropes and i liked the lines of the stripes in the floats!
With sunrise light, killer color and the tack sharp 90mm Fuji lens, how could you miss!
Same goes for tho orange rope and pilings!
A boat that is past it’s prime was just to much fun to capture and process for affect.
Finally, I just an never resist shooting what people paint on building, and this one was really interesting!!!
….and finally, it may be predictable, but red buildings and a white boat, gotta do it!!!!
Thanks for tagging along this week!
Blessings,
the pilgrim
By-the-way, the two coiled rope shots were with the Fuji X30, a great, compact, carry camera!!
O.K. just for fun, this is the lead image converted to a monochrome in Silver Efex Pro 2. I put it at the bottom so you would have to scroll back and forth to compare them, each has it’s own qualities, the color shot is all about the color of the hulls, the monochrome all about shapes, yet both work, but which works best????? You decide.

A great group images. I like them all especially the painted building but you would have expect that from me after the Roanoke workshop.
Looking forward to you presentation on Thursday.
David
I’m looking forward to being with you guys too! Think I may show some of the this trips stuff as part of the program.
In terms of your question about B&W vs. Color — for this particular image I would give the B&W a slight edge. It is not a technically related issue, just a personal preference.
I feel the same, while I like the odor of the rope think it becomes the subject!
Oh man…. I did not realize that Fuji captured smells 🙂
Good catch! Amazing isn’t it! Dang auto spell!
I usually have a penchant for black and white – working four years at Ilford Canada will do that to ‘ya – but I think the colour versions work better for me. Man, I was wracking my brain trying to figure out where you got the red buildings and the white boat, then I saw that you captured that on PEI. I look forward to our next time together, Bill.
Thanks Kevin for your hard work for us!!!
Nice pics. When you say you shoot 3 versions of each image – is that a setting in XT-1 that you can turn on?
Yes, theFuji X System cameras allow, (in JPEG), for you to make three bracketed shots each time you push the shutter release. The camera makes a single file, but processes it as three separate files. You can do; Exposure, ISO, White Balance, or Film Simulation brackets. I have my cameras set to make Velvia, Provia, and Monochrome with a red filter.
I like the lighthouse shot in black and white. It gives it a bleak look that goes well with the lonely lighthouse on the rocky coast. I also like the B&W better for the mooring line on the cleat. As an old Navy man, the saturated color of the line in the color version does not look natural to me! I guess that’s just me not being able to separate the artistic attributes of the photo from all my past experiences staring at that particular object!
I agree Mark, for me Monochrome is strongest when the image is about shapes, line and form, the color while interesting is actually, at least for me, is a distraction.
