Who needs a Macro lens?????
For a couple of weeks I have been inundated with emails about the rumor that Fuji has decided not to make the 120mm f 2.8 Macro lens that goes 1:1! First I do not know whether that is true or not. I’m sure Fuji will produce some kind of longer focal length Macro lens, until they do I have a my Macro System; the 90mm f 2!!
Below is a series of images made with the 90mm lens, each are labeled. The 90mm f 2 is one of the very sharpest lenses I’ve ever shot, maybe “the most”! If you have the two Fuji automatic extension tubes ( the MCEX-16 and the MCEX-11), and if you can pick up a high quality two element diopters like the old Nikon 5T and 6T you can do a lot of close-up work to beyond life size or 1:1.
My example is a cigar box art, the image below is for your perspective.
Bottom Line: Macro lenses are convenient and I’m sure at some point Fuji will offer us an upgrade in terms of focal length to the current 60mm Macro, which is an excellent lens, but does not offer a ton of working distance, until then, the Fuji 90mm f2, automatic extension tubes and diopters are a great solution! If you happen to own the Fuji 1.4 converter you can put that behind the two extension tubes stacked and get even closer! Fun stuff!

First bourbon…….Now cigars? I’m beginning to see a disturbing trend here!
It is, isn’t it!!!!
I hope Fuji would come out with a zoom macro (50-120 / 70-180 FX) at F4. But in the mean time I will use the extension tubes and close up filters on my normal zoom lenses when they don’t focus close enough.
Do you have any idea why Nikon discontinued the “T” diopters? It would be nice to have more options than Canon’s 500D (which works great with Fuji glass, BTW).
Wish I knew, tried to find that out when worked for them, imagine they didn’t sell enough to keep making them!? If thy brought them back, they would sell like hot cakes!!!
You can buy them used on eBay or from KEH.com
They show up occasionally, the 5T (62mm) is the best choice! They sold for around $39. back years ago when they were available, now I’ve seen them as high as $175.!!!!!
I think I paid around $100 for my 5T on Ebay.

1) You can’t use the 1.4 extender with the 90mm, it doesn’t fit.
2) I was (am) looking forward to the IS in the macro lens. It works wonders with the 50-140 and 100-400, and would be a real boon in a macro lens.
It does with extension tubes in front of it!
Fuji Macro shooting is on my bucket list for the Fuji Washington Workshop next week. See and meet you then. Thanks for the primer.
Great to be with you!
I enjoy the info on your website. Thnx!.
With thanks! It is an impressive online site!.
I was thinking that if I got the XF 90 I’d use the Canon 500D to bring it up to macro or just use my Nikon 180 ED AIS with the 500D and do macro that way.
Can’t wait for the XT2. Perhaps after the big sale coming up it’ll be announced?
Bill, still vertical, pulse and breathing???
A very good thing!
Wow, gorgeous site. Thnx ..
