News you’ll never hear…….

I addressed the terrible shooting in Newtown, a few weeks ago, and I just received this from a  friend this morning.  It sheds new light on all the violence, I think it is worth some thought.  It may be that guns are not what needs to be banned!

In every documented school shooting since 1992, 78 instances, every single shooter, every one, was either on a controlled substance or coming off of one, this is the list:

Prozac

Paxil

Zoloft

Anafranil

Luvox

Cymbalta

Celexa

Lexapro

Welbutrin

Now all of these medications have their place and have helped patients who need them, but if people that are on these medications, that need to be kept away from guns, not law abiding, careful citizens.

Talk to your representatives!

Blessings,

Wow that is indeed eye opening! I have friends that have needed types of these medications and I know it is very much a dicey and long term “dance” to get the dosage just right. The affects of an inappropriate dosage is horrible.

It seems President Obama has provisions in his new gun regulation to ensure mental illnesses are addressed. In fact I think the background checks are to be expanded to flag more people. I agree whole-heartily that some people should not own guns or have access to guns. However, we have to be careful we do not paint everyone with the same brush. Not everyone taking these medications are “disturbed” or “unfit” individuals. I think there is still a stigma attached to mental diseases where people do not seek out help. I think if we can offer more help and help remove the stigma present then more people will discuss their issues and hopefully avoid more tragic and completely unnecessary violence towards our fellow human beings.

Couldn’t agree more, it’s cause and effect, and many of the people that have done these awful acts
are very far from the norm. I know people that depend on those same medications and as you say, they would never do anything like we’ve seen. We meed to help those t hat need help and not punish those
      that have done no wrong.

Good stuff, Bill. I was so frustrated when I saw excerpts of the President’s comments in the wake of the 23 provisions announced Tuesday. One such comment was this:

“If there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try,” Obama said. “When it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us, we must act now. … Let’s do the right thing.”

I took it at face value, feeling very violated at the idea that gun control has only become worthy cause since Newtown. That is, until a friend said “What about all the unborn children?’

    Whoa.

I immediately penned a very passionate and Bible- based letter to the President. Writing it was therapeutic, but I didn’t send it because it ended with the following words: “You, Sir, are a hypocrite.”

I knew he wouldn’t lay eyes on my letter and I’m pretty sure God doesn’t honor name calling of authority, which He has allowed to be seated above me.

Still, to identify guns as the main issue, when it really boils down to the evil that dwells in the heart of man and will not be stopped no matter what law or legislation is passed, was insulting to my intelligence and my faith. This just further conveys the idea that there is much more to be considered amidst the still-raw emotion of what was a very tragic situation.

The gun issue is not about lives, if lives mattered to this group, they would be trying to find a way to reduce the number of abortions, which they certainly are not! All people have agendas, and some simply hate guns, and don’t want anyone to have them, problem is it won’t solve the real problem, men’s hearts.

      • Ron Longwell says:

You are so right, Bill. Until we get to the real issue – the great void and consequent sickness of men’s hearts – banning implements and tools will never accomplish its stated goal.

      • Chuck Nickle says:

You are right. It’s not about saving lives. Until our country and especially those in high positions turn to guidance from The Lord their direction will be coming from very unspiritual places. The Lord must be disappointed when He looks down on the USA. All we can do as Christians is hang on tight, trust in The Lord and let Him direct our paths.

I’m tempted to try to do more, but I know anything done in my strength will not last, only He can bring the changes we need!

          • Jim Wilson says:

Unfortunately the government always seeks a solution to push an agenda, expand their powers, spend billions, and generally ignore the real issues. Family, parenting, the example of Christ and His inclusion in our daily lives, personal responsibility, how about mandates for those for starters? They cost nothing but our time and hearts and they reap much.

Anyone else find it curious that the horrors at Sandy Hook got so much press, so much clamor, and such quick action from Washington, but we’ve snuffed out 55 million little lives in America with barely a wimper? The irony enveloping us these days is nothing short of amazing, and the answers are so timelessly simple.

The issues of abortion is forever perplexing to me, and it show the complete lack of sincerity of those that ignore it, and push their agendas on the backs of the poor victims of Sandy Hook and other crimes!

  5. Robert Christopulos says:

    Hi Bill,

Though I am no great fan of guns, I read this post with particular poignancy. As a semi-retired minister and former foster parent, the first observation I have on this issue is that you are absolutely correct. Persons on these medications are prone to particularly destructive acts, and need to be kept away from all weapons, being carefully monitored to keep them from doing harm to themselves or others.

There is a place for guns, for hunting, target shooting, and personal defense. In this I agree with the Founding Fathers. The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, the other civil unrests during our history have taught us that responsible ownership of guns has a very real role in the preservation of our liberties, and must not be taken from the hands of an informed and responsible citizenry.

Of course, living in the big city, and being involved with the mentally ill as much as I am, were I to be in need of a weapon, it would most probably be a can of pepper spray. Actually, in many of our metropolitan areas, I would urge women to carry a can of mace with them at all times.

May God give us the wisdom to protect the Bill of Rights.

    Blessings Bill,
