Versatile tools…..

Visiting an old friend!  My workshop partner Jim Begley has always preferred the pro grade Nikons, the D3s, and D4.  He also borrowed my brand new consignment lens the 28-300 ( a long time ago ), and I never saw it again, now I know why!!!!  This is a big, heavy, but very versatile combination!  It isn’t a hiker’s combo unless you are a 30 year younger Schwartnagger!    It focuses very close, and is wonderful for machine gunning HDR images!  Now I’m not suggesting this secret weapon is why Jim shoots such gorgeous stuff, nope, but it hasn’t hurt him either.  I received one as a going away gift from Nikon and you can bet it will always be in my field kit!  The fact that it was arranged by my dear friend Bill Pekala, means even more!

It’s good to meet old friends, again!!!!

Blessings,

the pilgrim

A 28-300 wasn’t necessarily on my radar. I just figured it was a lot of compromise to have that great a range and internet reviews were so mixed on it. Just before I went to Old Car City, Nikon offered $150 off and I figured I couldn’t afford not to buy it before the deal went off. I love mine and haven’t found the compromises made to be an issue at all. I’m very happy with it and it will come with me to Glacier. See you in September!

This brings to mind an interesting tidbit from one of the 2012 Southwest Tour classrooms. If I recall correctly, each instructor told which lens they’d brought for most of their landscape work, and explained their rationale. There were several 28-300s in that lineup! My LR metadata show that 80% of the shots come from the 28-300!

  3. Hi Bill
As always love your photography and your stories. I purchased the 28 – 300 when it first came out and really love it. I keep it on my D4 and shoot with it constantly. It is just so versatile. Yes it has some distortion issues, but they are easily correct in Light Room.

It gives very sharp images saves a lot of shoe leather. 🙂 Looking forward to your new journeys.
    Regards,
    Dave

  4. Bill – those images with the D4 are absolutely amazing. I know it’s a larger camera, but oh, those photos are SPECTACULAR!!! I thought the ones you shared the other day were incredible also.

Thanks Catherine, two very different cameras, each capable of bringing home the bacon!
